Previously, Bored Panda reached out to the redditor Cluelessnumber7, who’s the moderator of the r/InstagramReality community. The moderator explained the adverse effects all the heavily edited images have on people.

First, it sets unrealistic expectations that influencers purport to their easily impressionable audiences. “The amazingly smooth skin, suddenly common almond-shaped eyes, pouty lips, sharp jawlines, slim hourglass shapes, and so on,” they commented.

Meanwhile, the viewers have no idea how long it took to pick the outfit, hunt down the perfect lighting, and many other little details that come before face-tuning every picture-perfect Insta look. Without discussing the use of editing apps such as Photoshop and Facetune, “there is now a countless amount of people comparing themselves to (and perhaps spending money to look like) a person who doesn’t exist,” Cluelessnumber7 told us.

The second problem that hasn’t been addressed enough is the insecurities of the influencers who feel an urge to edit their pictures. “They’ve been editing their photos for so long it could mean losing the validation from their followers, losing followers, and maybe losing sponsors if they came clean.”

As huge crowds of followers become familiar with your fictional, yet perfect look, it may be impossible to speak out about all the editing that goes into creating their brand. “So, they would rather enjoy the false fame than risk losing it over integrity,” the moderator concluded.
